Work Permit

Canada is an exciting place to work for many skilled workers globally. More than 200,00 foreign skilled workers worldwide visit Canada on a Temporary Canadian work permit.

A Canadian Work Permit allows a foreign national to take up jobs in Canada. A Work Permit is mandatory for those who want to work in Canada, except for some cases where it is exempted.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for a work permit, one has to meet certain eligibility criteria set by the Canadian government to evaluate a candidate’s potential to contribute to the Canadian economy and culture. These eligibility criteria are-
  • Proof of sufficient funds to sustain yourself and family members, if any.
  • A police clearance certificate from your country stating that you do not have any criminal record
  • Prove that you are not a threat to Canadian security
  • Medical certificates that prove you are medically fit
  • Must not work for an employer deemed ineligible on the list of employers

Open Work Permit

An Open Work permit authorizes foreign nationals to work for any employer throughout Canada. This kind of work permit will enable one to work in any province of Canada, and for any employer they want.

Advantages

An open work permit is not limited to any specific employer. You have the option of working for any employer in any province. This exposes foreign nationals to Canadian work experience, which boosts their chances of qualifying for PR programs such as-
  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
  • Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)
  • Federal Skilled Worker
  • Federal Skilled Trade
  • Express Entry
  • Quebec Immigration Program

Post-Graduation Work Permit

This is for the students who are done with their graduation from a Canadian DLI and are eligible to apply for an open work permit and gain precious Canadian work experience. The National Occupational Classification categorizes skill levels, and one has to follow the same to get work experience. This experience is crucial for qualifying for PR under the Canadian Experience Class. Another advantage of the Post-Graduation Open Work Permit is that it does not require the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).

It also makes one eligible for PR programs such as-
  • Federal Skilled Worker
  • Federal Skilled Trades
  • Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)
  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
  • Quebec Immigration Programs

International Experience Class Work Permit

International Experience Class Work Permit is a permission that authorizes foreign nationals to travel and work in Canada. This program attracts young professionals to Canada and helps them obtain valuable knowledge and experience.

This program is beneficial for those who-
  • Are you looking to work in more than one location
  • Want to work for more than one employer
  • Wish to earn some money for your travel expenses
  • Do not have a job offer

Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA)

What is LMIA?

An LMIA or Labour Market Impact Assessment is required by an employer when hiring a foreign national. When Canadian workers or permanent residents cannot perform a job, the LMIA gives a green signal to employers to recruit foreign workers with relevant expertise in that particular job profile. A positive LMIA is often referred to as a confirmation letter. Upon receiving the LMIA, a worker can apply for a work permit.

For a work permit, workers require-
  • The LMIA number
  • A contract
  • A copy of the LMIA
  • A job offer letter
